82nd Oscars: Christoph Waltz wins best supporting actor

Congrats to Inglourious Basterds' Christoph Waltz for winning the first Oscar of the evening: best supporting actor. He won for his role as World War II German colonel Hans Landa, who is searching for Jews hiding in German-occupied France.

Waltz beat Matt Damon, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, and Toronto-born Christopher Plummer.

His win was expected, and far from a surprise. Waltz had been sweeping this category at all the other award shows, including the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and numerous critics awards.

The award was presented by Penelope Cruz, who is up for best supporting actress for Nine. She won the best supporting actress award last year for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
