Watch & Learn: Massive maker festival coming to Vancouver's Queen Elizabeth Theatre plaza this month
Vancouver’s maker community is coming together in a big way on August 19 and 20 for the city’s inaugural Watch & Learn: an arts-and-crafts fair offering a bevy of handmade fashion, home, beauty, and edible goods for sale, plus how-to workshops, curated art installations, and more.
Presented by Vancouver Civic Theatres at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre plaza, the two-day fete will showcase locally made from goods from 35-plus artisans, including laser-cut jewellery by Birch Street Studio, bookmarks and stationery by Craftedvan, and West Coast–inspired wood prints by Reclaimed Print Co. (The lineup is curated by Etsy, so you know it’s gonna be good.)
A number of DIY workshops happening throughout the weekend will also allow attendees to take home their own macrame wall hangings, wildcrafted jun tonics, Indigenous healing salves, and other handcrafted items. The classes are led by makers such as Saige and Skye, Sophena Kwon, and El Patcha. Seats must be booked online in advance.
Watch & Learn has guests covered for brunch (and dinner), too: the event will boast a fleet of Vancouver’s top food trucks, including Via Tevere, Chickpea, and mobile vegan ice-cream shop Say Hello Sweets. A pop-up beer garden and bar will serve suds from Strange Fellows, Backcountry Brewing, and Good Company Lager, plus kombucha and ginger beer for the non-alcohol crowd.
In addition, live-painting demos will be conducted onsite by local artists Benjamin William Knight and Peter Ricq. Live music will be provided by acts such as Twin River, Old Soul Rebel, Jody Glenham, and others.
Watch & Learn takes place on August 19 and 20, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre plaza. Tickets start at $7 in advance online and at the door. Children 12 years old and under get in for free.
