Andy Warhol artworks are on display in Vancouver—this weekend only

Most of us will never be able to afford the world’s most exquisite and iconic art. Which, honestly, is okay! That’s what galleries are for. Art is meant to be shared—or at least, it’s at its best when it can be shared.

Which is why art-lovers (and pop culture-lovers) will be excited to hear that two original Andy Warhol screen prints—along with a smattering of other pieces by important artists—are currently on display to the public, for free, at Vancouver’s Heffel Gallery. They are being shown here as part of Heffel’s fall auction tour, which also has stops in Calgary and Montreal before ending in Toronto, where the auction itself will take place on November 23.

Andy Warhol, 1928 - 1987, American. Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, from Reigning Queens, Royal Edition (F.S.II.337A), screenprint on Lenox Museum Board with diamond dust, 1985, signed in graphite and editioned R 8/30, with the printer’s blindstamp, Rupert Jasen Smith, New York and on verso stamped with the artist’s copyright stamp, published by George C.P. Mulder. 39 3/8 x 31 1/2 in, 100 x 80 cm.

Along with the Warhols, included in the auction offering are works by Canadian abstract expressionist Jean Paul Riopelle, American figurative painter and sculptor Alex Katz, English contemporary sculptor Henry Moore, Canadian abstract painter Paul-Émile Borduas, and Vancouver’s own revered painter Emily Carr, among others. In total, 94 pieces are up for grabs, with the auction house estimating a total in sales of $13 to $20 million.

Of course, that’s an outrageous amount of money, and is certainly not the only way to collect art (see here; here; and here, for starters). But there is something exceptionally special about seeing a famous art piece in the flesh—of laying eyes upon the work of a creative genius. Regardless of price, it truly hits different.

Andy Warhol, 1928-1987, American. Mick Jagger (F.S.II.147) screenprint on Arches Aquarelle paper, 1975, signed by Mick Jagger and editioned 32/250 and on verso stamped with the Seabird Editions copyright stamp. 43 1/2 x 29 in, 110.5 x 73.7 cm.
