This weekend, the Lower Mainland's third-largest city took a big step forward in connecting different neighbourhoods.

It came with the official opening of Willingdon Linear Park in Burnaby, which connects Brentwood Town Centre with Hastings Street to the north.

The 13-block stretch of land on the east side of Willingdon Avenue includes public art, street furniture, and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists.

The opening coincided with the North Burnaby Community Fair and was attended by a couple of thousand people.

It came about as a result of the city assembling land along Willingdon Avenue over a 30-year period.

It's being called Burnaby's "outdoor hallway". Along the route are molded concrete benches, pedestrian lighting, and plenty of landscaping.

There are also two "pocket parks" at Charles and Parker streets.
