VIFF 2019: Varda by Agnès

Cinema buffs should flock to this reflection on 60 years of moviemaking by the godmother of the nouvelle vague—and feminism in film. The through line is an illustrated lecture by the late nonagenarian director, a diminutive firecracker ever bedecked in purple, as is her signature bob. But it soon morphs into a playful, clip-by-clip excavation of her pioneering work, including 1962’s real-time experiment Cléo de 5 à 7.

What you grow to appreciate is that the ego-free, articulate Varda, who made 2017’s whimsical Faces Places, has never filmed a single shot without deep consideration or, as she puts it, “empathy and love”.
