VIFF 2015: Paco de Lucía: A Journey is pure pleasure for guitar freaks

Paco de Lucía: A Journey (Spain)

Pure pleasure for guitar freaks, this Journey details de Lucía’s unique role as a musician who intuitively fused flamenco and jazz traditions. He formed a particular bond with high-level players like John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola, who pay tribute to the great man, dead last year at 66.

Considering that this was directed by de Lucía’s son, it’s odd that the film omits or underplays some key bits; most notably, it stresses the chain-smoking guitarist’s close relationship with brother Pepe, while pretty much forgetting their eldest brother, Ramón, a guitarist and singer with whom Paco toured for many years.
