One would expect fond feelings for Soviet-style regimes to be most common in economic disaster zones like Moldova, but it was in the former GDR that Ostalgie took firmest root. Chronologically situated in the 1980s, this Silver Bear (best director) winner from the last Berlin Film Festival explores the lives of four major characters: a brace of doctors with differing social ideals, a tormented teenage runaway, and a western capitalist who might be a lot less than he seems. Realpolitik just doesn’t get any realer than this. Superb.
