Fire crews are fighting a challenging blaze in Richmond.

The city has shut down Westminster Highway from Number 4 Road to Shell Road.

The land fire is burning 300 metres northwest of the intersection of Shell Road and Westminster Highway.

CBC's Yvette Brend has reported that the fire is believed to have spread to a bog, which is one of the reasons the area is becoming so enveloped in smoke.

It's across the street from Richmond Nature Park.

No structures are in any jeopardy but the fire is creating major traffic tie-ups in the area.

Meanwhile, Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued another heat warning for Metro Vancouver.

"A prolonged stretch of well above normal temperatures is forecast for the south coast as a ridge of high pressure remains anchored offshore," the alert states. "This period of hot weather will persist through the weekend."

The thermometer is expected to reach 29° C in coastal areas and go into the 30s in inland areas.

Environment and Climate Change Canada and medical health officers are urging people to remain hydrated by drinking cold beverages, preferably water.

They're also recommending spending time in air-conditioned facilities for a few hours every day as long as the alert remains in effect.
