Why aren't the Vancouver mayoral candidates featuring more authentic city imagery on their websites?

Warning: this is not the most important article that you'll read about the Vancouver civic election.

In fact, it might be the least significant piece of the 2018 campaign.

But it interests me, so I'm going to write it anyway.

For the life of me, I don't understand why more candidates aren't posting imagery on their websites of them looking like they're mayor of the city.

There are a few things worth noting in the photo above of Vancouver–West End NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert.

You can see the backdrop of the city. That's because it's taken from Stanley Park looking out over Coal Harbour.

Chandra Herbert has a confident, optimistic bearing—just what you like to see in a mayor.

And the image screams "Vancouver" with the water and the gleaming towers behind him.

Unfortunately, he's not running, so he can't use it in this race.

The photo below of former Vancouver police chief Jamie Graham has similar qualities.

He looks like a tough hombre who's not going to let troublemakers ruin his pristine Vancouver.

Former police chief Jamie Graham's official photo conveyed the impression that he was in charge of Vancouver.

There's no mistaking that this is Vancouver in this image. My guess is that it was taken from the roof of the police station near the Cambie Street Bridge.

Unfortunately in this election, we're not seeing these types of majestic images on the websites of those hoping to succeed Gregor Robertson as mayor.

Instead, some look more like PhotoShop jobs, which don't carry nearly the same emotional impact.

Will the next mayor ever stand up and be photographed in front of a decent backdrop of the city? Or is this all we can expect in the final days of the campaign?

      We'll be watching.
