Eight temporary shelters for homeless people in Vancouver have been granted funding that will enable them to continue operating until next year.

The B.C. government announced on March 4 that it approved an additional $3.1 million in operational funds to keep eight temporary shelters open in Vancouver for the next year.

The shelters, which offer a total of almost 240 beds, were scheduled to have closed down on March 31.

Seven shelters will remain open until March 31, 2020:

      • 20 beds at 828 Cambie Street, open from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m.
      • 12 beds at 1138 Burrard Street, open from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
      • 40 beds (increased by 10 beds) at 1060 Howe Street, open from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m.
      • 16 beds at 131 Dunlevy Avenue, open from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m.
      • 40 beds at 134 E Cordova Street, open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
      • 30 beds at 138 E Cordova Street, open 24 hours, seven days a week
      • 40 beds at 1401 Hornby Street, open 24 hours, seven days a week

An eighth shelter at 1648 East 1st Avenue, will be open 24 hours, seven days a week, until June.

According the B.C. government news release, the city’s 940 permanent shelter spaces are currently operating at full capacity. An additional 120 extreme-weather response spaces as well as warming centres open during severe weather conditions.

Civic homelessness outreach team members will be working with operators to provide support and connections to income assistance, health support, and access to housing.

A map of shelters in Vancouver is available at the B.C. Housing website.
