The freshest dining spots and events in the city

A (W)HOLE LOT OF HEARTS
To be honest, there are no holes. These are heart-shaped, strawberry-filled doughnuts, and they’re sold at Marketplace IGAs until February 24. Buy them as six-packs ($3.99) or singles (99 cents) when you pick up a tall Seattle’s Best coffee. During this Heart to Heart campaign, $1 from each half-dozen and 50 cents from each singleton sold go to Variety—The Children’s Charity.

DIET DYNAMITE
Doctor Evil, aka patissier Peter Fong, has unleashed a trio of truly wicked winter desserts at Ganache (1262 Homer Street). Chocolat ($5.75), which consists of a combination of biscotti, cheescake, cake, and mousse, needs no translation. Then there’s Thé Earl Grey et Cardamome ($5.50) or Noisettes, Canneberges et Poire ($5.25). If you’re still counting calories, don’t go there.

COLD-WEATHER HARVEST
No red ripe tomatoes, but there will be lots of other locally grown veggies and late-season fruit at the Winter Farmers Market this Saturday (February 3, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at the WISE Hall (1882 Adanac Street). Also look for meats, seafood, cheeses, breads, jams, pickles, and other edibles that know no season.

HOT DIGGITY DOGS
“A dog you can trust”? That’d be the delicious “all muscle, no filler” J. N. & Z. Deli weenies ($4.25 each) sold from FETCH, Sean Heather’s relaunched hot-dog cart. Condiments—sweet corn relish, “special sauce”, and barbecue ketchup—hail from Heather’s Lucky Diner in Yaletown. Find FETCH weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Gastown at Abbott and Water streets.

PRIMO VALUE VINO
Now’s the time to restock the cellar or treat yourself to something new as Marquis Wine Cellars (1034 Davie Street) deeply discounts some stellar wines from France, Australia, and Washington state. BC Liquor Stores is clearing shelves of a hodge-podge of labels to make room for incoming stock. Sale selection varies widely from store to store.

MOLTO PICCOLO
While the restaurant is spare, the servings at just-opened La Buca (4025 Macdonald Street, 604-730-6988) are anything but. Chef Andrey Durbach delivers ultraflavourful Italian cooking and hearty servings like an intense zuppa di pesce (fisher an’s soup), lip-smacking pastas, and a gargantuan veal osso buco. Partner Chris Stewart’s mostly Italian wine list is a beaut.

HIC, HIC HOORAY
Want to know where the “best of the best” local beer culture for 2007 is at? The second annual CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale Society) Vancouver Beer Awards have Mission Springs Brewing as best local brew pub, followed by Dix and Steamworks. Best B.C. brewery is Phillips Brewing, with Storm Brewing second and Crannóg Ales third. The Whip is best local beer pub or restaurant, followed by the Railway Club and the Raven.
