From December 7 to 16, Bah Humbug! An Eastside Christmas Carol takes the stage at SFU's Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 West Hastings).

The eighth annual production takes Charles Dickens's holiday classic and situates it in modern-day East Vancouver. This year's edition is directed by playwright and actor James Fagan Tait and stars blues musician Jim Byrnes.

Byrnes plays the main role of Ebeneezer Scrooge, here a selfish pawnbroker who confronts the spirits of past, present, and future, who bring him face-to-face with the memories he has tried to forget.

In Bah Humbug! An Eastside Christmas Carol , the streets of Vancouver are brought to life through the animations of the art of Richard Tetrault, known for capturing East Vancouver's urban landscape through large-scale mono-print, linocut projections, and murals.

Bill Costin provides musical direction for the play, which includes more than 30 musical numbers that range from traditional Christmas carols to songs by artists like Buffy-Sainte Marie and Nine Inch Nails, as well as a performance by the Saint James Music Academy Youth Choir.

In a press release, SFU Woodward's Cultural Programs director Michael Boucher says that "Bah Humbug! deals with large themes and touches on serious issues, but it is, above all, a family celebration, sometimes bittersweet, but also filled with humour, compassion, and a celebration of resilience."

Tickets for Bah Humbug! An Eastside Christmas Carol  are $35 and $20 and are available online or by calling 778-782-9286.
