The Georgia Straight proudly sponsors Big Bang percussion concerts

      Vancouver New Music presents Big Bang, a series of percussion concerts on March 8 and 9 at 8 p.m. at the Orpheum Annex (823 Seymour Street).

      On March 8, Vancouver’s Fringe Percussion will be joined by Montreal’s Aiyun Huang and local performer Katie Rife. Together, they will perform various works, including “For O, For O, the Hobby Horse is Forget” by John Cage, “Third Construction” by Carlos Chavez”, Toccata” by Lou Harrison, “The Song of Queztalcoatl” by Jocelyn Morlock”, and more. The program will also include a new arrangement of “Darwin’s Walken Fish Quartet”, which was originally commissioned by Vancouver New Music in 2006. On March 9, New York’s Mantra Percussion will take the stage for the premiere of Michael Gordon’s “Timber”, a complex piece for six percussion players.  

      Tickets to each concert are $35 for adults and $19 for students and seniors. Tickets can be purchased in advance online, by calling 1-800-838-3006, or at Sikora’s (432 West Hastings Street).
