Basting is worthwhile.

This past day, I have been basting a chicken in marinade and herbs. Even while I was at work, my attention drifted off into a daydream where I peppered and salted it. Tonight, I will have a magnificent feast where legends will be told.

... want some really tasty food, salt a brisket in the fridge for a couple of weeks, then boil it. I mean, really salt that fucker, like 1/4" all over it (it'll concentrate in the bottom of the bag, just move it around once in a while).
