Photos: Free Fight for Beauty exhibition examines intersection of art, fashion, architecture, and more

A custom-made, shipwreck-inspired piano designed by Bing Thom Architects, a vintage cocoon coat from legendary French couturier Paul Poiret, and a scorching-red model of a striking, dragonlike sculpture crafted by Chinese artist Zhang Huan.

At first glance, the pieces may appear unrelated, but together, they make up a small part of Fight for Beauty, a free pop-up exhibition running from October 14 to December 17 at the Fairmont Pacific Rim (1038 Canada Place) that explores local developer Westbank’s past, present, and future projects and the intersections of art, culture, music, and fashion that permeates the company’s work.

Curated by Westbank founder Ian Gillespie—and inspired by a poem that Claudia Cristovao, a longtime collaborator, penned that expresses the need for architects and other creators to prioritize “beauty” in their ventures—the temporary installation is an amalgamation of works by local and international artists and pieces from Westbank’s curated collection of photographs, paintings, and iconic gowns from the likes of Fred Herzog, Tristesse Seeliger, Alexander McQueen, and others.

Taking place in a pop-up tent emblazoned with magenta graffiti that houses an expanded iteration of Vancouver designer Omer Arbel’s forest of sculptural bulbs, 16.480, Fight for Beauty also showcases a number of successful and in-progress architectural models by Westbank in collaboration with luminaries such as Kengo Kuma and Bjarke Ingels.

A 58-minute audio component is available to visitors in which Gillespie outlines the challenges that the company has faced as a result of its proposed efforts to emphasize sustainable and community-building spaces. Fight for Beauty, a newly released hardcover book by Gillespie, which examines the topic in further depth, is available onsite at the installation, too.

“One of my hopes with this exhibition is to underscore the vital role that beauty, the stimulating, provoking and life-altering kind, plays in our lives and the importance of recognizing beauty—housing it, producing it and keeping an eye open for it," said Gillespie in a press statement.

This is the largest exhibition curated and presented by Westbank since its Japan Unlayered installation brought Japanese labels such as Muji and Beams to Vancouver earlier this year.
