      Caravan World Rhythms presents Montreal hip-hop group Nomadic Massive at the Rickshaw, with guests "Rap and Soul" crew JB The First Lady, Kimmortal & Missy D., DJ Su Comandante.

      Los Angeles metalcore band In This Moment coheadlines the Commodore with American rap-rock band Hollywood Undead, with guests Of Mice and Men and Avatar.

      The New North Collective performs jazz, folk, new music, spoken word, and rock at Burnab'y's Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.

      Yukon country singer-songwriter Kim Beggs plays the WISE Hall, with guest Larissa Tandy.

      Canadian Caribbean-music group Kobo Town plays Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre.

       

      BENEFITS

      Martini Madness at Yaletown Brewing Co. sees three bartenders compete to see who can make the best martini, with proceeds to the Kids Help Phone.

      Bone Appetit at Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront features cocktails, vegan and vegetarian hors d'oeuvres, and a silent auction, with proceeds to the B.C. SPCA's Vancouver shelter.

      Canada Scores Celebration at Science World benefits vulnerable children participating in after-school programs.

       

      FORUMS

      Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Matt Dillahunty discuss how we can become more scientifically literate and how can we better educate society to value skepticism over faith at the Orpheum Theatre.

       

      COMEDY

      Comedian Ian Bagg performs the first of the three nights of standup at the Comedy Mix.

      ARTS ETCETERA

      The 14th annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival features 12 days of music, stories, songs, poetry, films, theatre, dance, spoken word, workshops, discussions, gallery exhibitions, mixed media, art talks, and history walks at various DTES locations. 

      Talent show at the Rio Theatre featuring Ryan Beil, warmup comedian Sean Yap Sei-Been Devlin, and house band Elliot Fanglord and Daniel Ruiz.

      An evening of music, interactive theatre, live painting, and altar-making at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC in celebration of the Day of the Dead.

      Cirque du Soleil presents Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities, a new production that takes you into the curio cabinet of an ambitious inventor who defies the laws of time, space, and dimension, at Concord Pacific Place.

      Fight for Beauty at Fairmont Pacific Rim features public art projects undertaken with world-class creatives, architecture from architects who are artists in their own right, and fashion by some of the greatest designers in recent history.

       

      DANCE

      Ballet BC presents the North American premiere of Johan Inger's B.R.I.S.A. and the world premiere of a new work by Cayetano Soto at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

       

      LITERARY

      City of Vancouver Book Award winner Carleigh Baker (Bad Endings) and finalists Sam Wiebe, Gabrielle Prendergast, and Ian M. Thom read from their works at the Vancouver Public Library's Alice MacKay Room.

      Author Jay Sherwood presents photos of B.C.'s past from his new book Surveying the Great Divide and discusses the major surveying projects of the early 1900s at Vancouver Public Library's Kitsilano branch.

       

      MUSIC

      Alexander Shelley conducts soprano Erin Wall and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in a performance of musical portraits of four Canadian women composed by Zosha Di Castri, Jocelyn Morlock, Nicole Lizée, and John Estacio. Concert takes place at the Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts.

      The International Society for Contemporary Music presents over 30 new music events featuring more than 135 composers from around the world at various Vancouver venues.

      The UBC Opera Ensemble performs Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice at the UBC Old Auditorium.

       

      THEATRE

      In association with Dipti Mehta, the Cultch presents Honour: Confessions of a Mumbai Courtesan, a testament to the humanity and lives of sex workers, at Vancity Culture Lab.

      The Arts Club Theatre Company presents a performance at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage of King Charles III, Mike Bartlett's political satire about what happens when Queen Elizabeth II dies and her son Charles ascends the throne.

      Pacific Theatre presents a performance of The Lonesome West, the story of two Irish brothers who eke out a squalid existence in the house of their deceased father.

      Metro Theatre presents a performance  of Calendar Girls, Tim Firth's story about a group of women from Yorkshire who rally around their grieving friend by baring their torsos to raise money for a cancer ward.

      Uncle Randy Productions presents the popular Broadway musical Jesus Christ Superstar, featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, at North Vancouver's Centennial Theatre.

      Canadian premiere of Theater Crossing’s psychological version of Stevenson's classic tale The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at Kitsilano Neighbourhood House.

      Performance at PAL Theatre of A Piece of My Heart, in which six women tell the often-ignored story of female soldiers, nurses, and civilians in wartime Vietnam.

      Shameless Hussy Productions presents the Vancouver premiere at Templeton Secondary School of Girls Like That, Evan Placey's play about a young girl who becomes the centre of attention when a naked photograph of her goes viral.

      Portrait of the Artist: An Exhibition from the Royal Collection at the Vancouver Art Gallery features more than 90 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and sculpture highlighting both the richness of the Royal Collection and the complex relationship that the British monarchy has had with artists for the last three and half centuries

      Intangible at Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art exhibition spotlights six Coast Salish artists influenced by tradition as well as contemporary inspiration.

      Entangled: Two Views on Contemporary Canadian Painting at the Vancouver Art Gallery offers insight into two distinctly different modes of painting that have come to dominate contemporary painting in Canada.

      Carol Sawyer: The Natalie Brettschneider Archive at the Vancouver Art Gallery presents the latest findings of Vancouver-based artist Sawyer's ongoing research project that deftly reconstructs the life and work of the genre-defying, fictional artist Brettschneider.

      Bill Reid Creative Journeys at Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art celebrates the three phases of the artist's creative journey, Pre-Haida (1948-1951), Haida (1951-1968) and Beyond Haida (1968-1998).

      Emily Carr: Into the Forest at the Vancouver Art Gallery is a collection of Emily Carr's forest paintings that highlight her continued exploration of the natural environment.

       

      MUSEUMS

      Amazonia: The Rights of Nature at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC features Amazonian basketry, textiles, carvings, feather works, and ceramics both of everyday and of ceremonial use, representing indigenous, Maroon, and white settler communities.

      In a Different Light: Reflecting on Northwest Coast Art at the Museum of Anthropology at UBC features more than 110 historical indigenous artworks and explores what we can learn from these works and how they relate to indigenous peoples’ relationships to their lands.

      The Lost Fleet at the Vancouver Maritime Museum investigates the unjust 1941 seizure of 1,200 Japanese-Canadian fishing vessels following the bombing of Pearl Harbour through a collection of historic photographs, models of Japanese-Canadian-built fishing boats, fishermen’s tools, and replica documents.

       

      ATTRACTIONS

      Edgewater Casino offers 24-hour gaming, over 60 table games, a poker room, a high-limit section, 500 slot machines, restaurants and lounges, and live entertainment, including concerts and televised UFC events.

      The new Parq Vancouver features two luxury hotels, a casino, eight restaurants and lounges, and a 30,000 square foot park.

      At the Bloedel Conservatory you can take in more than 200 free-flying exotic birds and 500 exotic plants and flowers.

      The 22-hectare VanDusen Botanical Garden features over 255,000 plants from around the world, a restaurant, a garden shop, and a horticulture library.

      Stanley Park features 400 hectares of trails, gardens, beaches, and West Coast rain forest, with scenic walking and biking along the 8.8 kilometre seawall.

      Take a ride in an exterior glass elevator and get a 360° view of Metro Vancouver and the North Shore mountains at Vancouver Lookout.

      The Capilano Suspension Bridge features seven suspended footbridges offering views 110 feet above the forest floor.

      The Vancouver Aquarium features almost 800 animal species in galleries ranging from Canada's Arctic to the Amazon rainforest.

      Lighthouse Park features 10 kilometres of hiking trails, picnic areas, guided walks provided by the Lighthouse Park Preservation Society, and the historical 1912 Point Atkinson Lighthouse.

      Science World features hundreds of interactive exhibits in five permanent galleries, live science demonstrations and workshops, and giant movies in the Omnimax Theatre.

       

      MOVIES

      The Cinematheque marks the 100th anniversary of Russia's October Revolution with a program of canonical and lesser-known works from the era. Screenings today of Battleship Potemkin (above) and The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks.

      As part of Render: The Vancouver International Music Video Festival, take in the world premiere of Agnete and the Merman, an immersive cinema experience, at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. 

      The four-day Vancouver Asian Film Festival at Cineplex Odeon International Village showcases independent Asian international diaspora cinema in English, and with English subtitles.

      The 29th annual Vancouver Jewish Film Festival at Fifth Avenue Cinemas features 38 films from nine countries, including 16 Canadian premieres.
