Laura Dern wins Oscar as best supporting actress; Brad Pitt wins as best supporting actor

      Two early awards on Oscars night have gone to veteran actors Laura Dern and Brad Pitt.

      Dern took home the best supporting actress Academy Award for her role as a divorce lawyer in Marriage Story.

      "You know, some say you never meet your heroes," Dern said in her acceptance speech. "But I say if you're really blessed, you get them as your parents.

      "I share this with my acting heroes, my legends, Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern."

      Dern was also honoured for her role in Marriage Story at the BAFTA, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild awards.

      Pitt won for his role as Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He played a stunt double for Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Rick Dalton.

      Pitt was also honoured for this role at the BAFTA, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild awards.

      Another early winner tonight was Korean director Bong Joon Ho and his writing partner, Han Jin-Won, fororiginal screenplay for Parasite.

      Update

      Later in the evening, Bong also won the Oscar for best director and Parasite won for best movie after earlier winning for best foreign-language film.
