The Georgia Straight musical advent calendar for Christmas 2018—Day Seven: Hip-hop edition

Given that it is now arguably the entire world's favourite category of music, it's a little odd that hip-hop has really only ever produced one certified-classic, perennially popular Christmas song. I'm talking, of course, about Run-D.M.C.'s "Christmas in Hollis".

The song has become so ubiquitous during the holidays that even D.M.C. himself—known to the Department of Motor Vehicles as Darryl McDaniels—doesn't want to hear it anymore. As he told the Washington Post in 2014:

“I’m scared to go to the mall, because every five steps somebody’s screaming, ‘It’s Christmastime in Hollis, Queens!’ Kids, grandmothers, it’s crazy. I can’t be going shopping till after Christmas.”

There are other seasonally appropriate rap songs, mind you. It just takes a bit of digging to find them. With that in mind, let's go all the way back to the start. Kurtis Blow was the first rapper to land a major-label contract, and his first single, 1979's "Christmas Rappin'", was one of the first commercially successful rap records.

There have been a few other hip-hop entries into the Christmas canon, some better than others. (And some thoroughly inappropriate. Like, really, really inappropriate.) Here are just a few, in no particular order:

Snoop Doggy Dogg, "Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto" (1996)
      Treacherous Three, "Santa's Rap" (1984)
      Run-D.M.C., "Christmas Is" (1992)
      OutKast, "Player's Ball" (1994)

And, yes, that last one is indeed a Christmas song. The lyrics make that fairly obvious, although you'd never know it from the video.

Did I miss any important ones? Let me know in the comments.

BONUS ROUND: It's the battle of the rap Grinches!

Busta Rhymes featuring Jim Carey, "Grinch" (2000)
Tyler, the Creator, "You're a Mean One" (2018)
Tyler, the Creator, "I Am the Grinch" (2018)
