Peru struck by 7.1-magnitude earthquake

      The government of Peru says at least two people are dead and 65 are injured after a large seismic event occurred close to the country's southern coast.

      According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in this area at 1:18 a.m. Pacific standard time.

      A tsunami warning was issued and then later called off.

      The BBC has reported that homes have been destroyed in smaller towns in the area.
