Vancouver park commissioner Stuart Mackinnon has been one of the more diligent politicians when it comes to advancing reconciliation.

In 2018, Mackinnon introduced a motion to acknowledge Indigenous names of areas under the park board's jurisdiction.

That same year, the Green commissioner brought forward another motion directing staff to examine the board's colonial roots.

"Truth-telling is the first step in helping unlock the past and helping us to understand 'where do we come from, what are we, and where are we going?'," Mackinnon said in a speech to the board at the time. "The truth of our common experiences will help heal all of our spirits and help pave the way to reconciliation."

On December 13, Mackinnon will present another motion dealing with reconciliation before the board.

It's seeking the commissioners' approval to "direct staff to define and develop an implementation plan with the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations for co-management of parklands within their traditional territories that are currently under Park Board jurisdiction per the Vancouver Charter".

"The Park Board has established the Stanley Park Intergovernmental Working Group with the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations to develop a long-term comprehensive plan for Stanley Park," the preamble states. "Traditional knowledge and stewardship of lands should be an integral part of park management."
