Good Night Out Vancouver releases beer with Port Moody's Brewers Row for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

In recognition of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Good Night Out Vancouver has partnered with four Port Moody breweries to launch a beer that will help support the local anti-harassment group’s efforts in making the region’s nightlife scene safer for women and those who identify as LGBT.

Produced by Yellow Dog Brewing, Moody Ales, Twin Sails Brewing, and Parkside Brewery, the citrus-zest IPA—dubbed Good Night Out—is crafted with Australian hops and contains strong notes of grapefruit, lemon, and orange. The crushable ale will be packaged in tall peach-tinted cans, each of which will contain a peel-off GNO sticker and a fact about sexual assault or harassment.

One of 75 different messages, which range from Statistics Canada data about sexual harassment to reminders that “consent is ongoing, enthusiastic, and mandatory”, will be printed on every can of Good Night Out. Imbibers are encouraged to share images of their cans using the hashtag #nowyougno on Instagram.

They’ll be available in four packs ($16.50) at Twin Sails, where it’s being brewed, and select public and private liquor stores starting Saturday (April 7). The beer will also be on tap at select bars and pubs, including the Burrard Public House (2414 Saint Johns Street, Port Moody) and St. James’s Well (248 Newport Drive, Port Moody), from this weekend onward. Partial proceeds from sales will benefit GNO’s consent and sexual-assault prevention training sessions, which the nonprofit offers to late-night establishments around the region.

GNO coordinator Stacey Forrester hopes that the beer will help normalize everyday conversation surrounding consent. She emphasizes that, according to Statistics Canada, over 500,000 sexual assaults are reported to police across the country every year, and one in five is drug-facilitated with alcohol being the most commonly cited substance.

“Grabbing a six-pack or four-pack of beer and heading out on your bike is a very Vancouver activity,” notes Forrester by phone, “and we just thought it would be an engaging way to get our content and our messaging out there.”

Collectively known as Brewers Row, the four participating breweries have collaborated annually to produce a beer for a good cause since 2016. Cody Allmin, co-owner at Twin Sails, says that the partnership with GNO is especially meaningful to him given his time working as a bartender in Metro Vancouver’s nightlife industry.

“The amount of times I’ve seen incidences—things that I’ve had to intervene in, almost getting into fights and stuff like that—just trying to stop some idiots who are doing stuff that’s not right,” he tells the Straight in a phone interview. “It’d be great to know that a lot of people out there are getting the training for how to resolve these things before they get out of hand.”

The Good Night Out beer will be launched at a special party taking place at Twin Sails (2821 Murray Street, Port Moody) on Saturday (April 7) from 12 p.m. until late.

From 2 to 4 p.m., the brewery-and-tasting-room will also play host to an oyster-shucking competition with She the Pacific, an all-female gang of oyster shuckers from around Vancouver. In addition, the establishment will be serving up a selection of fresh oysters and oyster po’ boys; a lineup of local musicians will offer entertainment throughout the day.
