Some West End residents received a shock when a sizeable tree came crashing down without warning on two apartment buildings.

The tree, about 12 metres tall, fell on the 1800 block of Nelson Street, between Denman and Gilford, on June 23. Several apartment windows were broken.

The roots were also ripped out of the ground, raising up the sidewalk near it.

A Vancouver Park Board crew removed some of the branches and returned today (June 24) to remove the rest of it.

VPB spokesperson Howard Normann told the CBC that it was not clear why the tree fell, as it appears to be healthy and there weren't any strong winds at the time, and an inspector will investigate to determine the cause.
