Ballet B.C. and Brit artists launch project on Kickstarter

A collaboration between the Contemporary Art Gallery and Ballet B.C.?

That's the intriguing art-dance partnership that's just popped up on Kickstarter, or at least on Art Basel's curated page of crowdfunding projects there.

Why so interesting? CAG says it's going to commission buzzed-about Brit visual artists John Wood and Paul Harrison--the duo known for meticulously constructed, austere-yet-comical videos, text works, and sketches--to team with the bright young dancers of Ballet B.C. for a cross-disciplinary performance. Brilliant, we say: check out the TateShots video about their work at the Tate Gallery, a lot of it depicting the two deadpan guys interacting with everyday objects like chairs, tables, and, er, cube vans.

But the project will only be funded if at least $25,000 is pledged by January 16, 2015, with funds to be used to bring the visual artists to Vancouver for an intensive development period during spring and fall 2015.

Ballerinas and chairs, tables, and cube vans? We have no idea what this project could look like, but it's bound to be cool.

We already have the Ballerina project here in Vancouver http://www.ballerinaprojectvancouver.com. Ther are also more talented photographers and videographers and visual artists in Vancouver, why waste money on unknowns?

It’s great to see a project that brings together the world class dancers from Ballet BC with internationally known, local not for profit, Contemporary Art Gallery. Artists Wood and Harrison have been producing highly engaging work for over twenty years, presented world over. I think that this project is a perfect example of a world-class showcase for BC talent. Surely there’s room for everyone.

Why do some out here have to be so parochial? By looking out into the world, Vancouver arts groups like Ballet BC will also take their work international.
