Bike Lanes...

... I am a cyclist, and I don't like bike lanes. They embolden the small percentage of asshole drivers to feel entitled to the road because "there's a bike lane over there." And many of them are simply to take away the most amazing routes, like 4th from Cambie Bridge out to UBC, that is probably the sweetest route out to alma---you climb a bit of a hill to get to 4th and Arbutus, but from there you essentially coast down to Alma. When there is a bike lane within a few blocks, asshole drivers expect bikes to take them. I don't believe in apartheid. Having bike lanes is one step closer to _requiring_ bikes to use them. Like on 10th now, the "bike lane" isn't even wide enough for bikes to safely pass. You can bet I am going to stay on the road where I can pass or be passed.

So you would rather be out in traffic than, oh, I don’t know, taking the seawall from Cambie to Alma? As for the bike route on 10th it is wide open with the exception of the hospital area. You can pass 10 abreast if no cars are present. The main reason I want bikes off of 4th and 10th is that I fear for cyclists safety. Lots of cyclists on these routes are dodging bus drivers, car doors and idiot drivers. Combine that with an astonishing lack of helmets and I just think the bike routes are better. Stay safe.

We have scads of unused bike lanes all over town. Mind you they are officially referred to as "sidewalks" but since nobody's on them they're mine!

Taxes were paid for those bike lanes. Use them and it was a waste. I don't bike but my taxes sure paid for those lanes to make sure you're safe and dandy. There are a lot of crazy drivers and I'm one!!

The solution to most safety issues is to allow a bike to take a lane like a motorcycle is allowed to, and to aggressively ticket drivers who will not respect bicycles. Car drivers are mostly mad with power, impatient, etc. and feel entitled to gun their engines behind cyclists. Part of driver licensing needs to be that car drivers are taught that a bicycle has a right to a lane, and that you cannot pass it "because there is room to squeak by if you cross a yellow line or half-way cross a dashed white line."

Take 16th, for example. There is only one lane of traffic. Cars will routinely gun their engines behind cyclists, and they will cross a solid yellow line, head toward visible oncoming traffic simply because they're too impatient to wait.

The issue is driver training and an antiquated motor vehicle act that treats cyclists as second-class citizens.

except maybe don't compare bike lanes to the freaking Apartheid.

Also how can anyone enjoy biking on West 4th?

vehicle or pedestrian?

Its time to license and charge cyclists like those in cars. Cyclists demand road space or bike lanes until it's inconvenient for them to stop at a stop light or obey traffic signs or wait their turn to turn... then suddenly they're on sidewalks, using crosswalks, going the wrong way in traffic, crossing the street in the middle of the block, etc.

Either you're a vehicle or you're a pedestrian. If you want to use the roads, follow the laws, get a license that shows you know the laws AND pays for your usage, stay off your damn phone, don't hold up traffic like an asshole while you crawl uphill, and actually enforce the laws with high fines, or GTFO and stay on the sidewalks. You can't have it both ways.

Because of the rude car traffic, you have to do it at night, but at like 3am from Cambie Bridge out to Alma is just amazing. Not much traffic.

And nobody every goes over 50km/h in a municipality, right?

The simple fact is that cars are held to a high standard concerning signs, lights, etc. because it's difficult for them to stop. Take the four-way stops on 10th. Cars alternate. If you have 10 bikes, there's no way they should all come to a dead stop, lose their momentum. They should all just go through the stop sign while the cars crossing 10th wait.

Bike lanes as apartheid, well now I've heard it all! Holy hell do you need some real problems. That's such a ridiculous and offensive comparison that nothing else you say has any meaning. How could you possible have an ounce of perspective and say something like that? I don't usually wish ill on anyone, but I guess I have to wish you actually experience what a real problem is like someday so you stop spewing such nonsense.

they should all just run the stop sign/red light like they usually do, get smoked by the car with the right of way and then be held at fault for running the red. the majority of cyclists are children with huge entitlement issues.
