The youngest congresswoman elected down in the US has to get an apartment in Washington DC. Think Vancouver is high? Check this out...
“The youngest woman ever elected to Congress has a problem - she can't afford her rent. That is until she starts her new job in January. After telling the New York Times she's waiting for her first pay cheque before renting an apartment in Washington DC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is again being called the "millennial Congresswoman". A one-bedroom apartment in Washington costs about US $2,160 per month.”
That is about CDN $2,850 for a one bedroom.

Take the US amount and convert it to Canadian dollars and say "That is about CDN $2,850 for a one bedroom."
Average income in the US is $50k a year. In Canada is $51k a year
And assuming she's not going to live in an old bedbug building, I looked and found that a nice 1 bedroom downtown rents for..... $2000+.

You look up the links in that article, the average price of a home in Washington D.C. is 585 000 dollars. Still a lot cheaper than Vancouver even if you factor in the exchange rate. Guess it's better to buy there. It also says in the more expensive D.C. neighbourhoods homes run one million so still cheaper than Vancouver.

What you’re failing to comprehend is that even if the cost of housing might be higher in some places, the salaries and wages tend to also be higher. Not to mention that we pay huge taxes compared to the US. If you factor in those details, you would understand why Vancouver places so high on the “unaffordable” scale.

Is this supposed to make me feel better about being in my mid thirties and having to split rent with two people?

Many in Vancouver won't be happy unless their rent is zero...but they'll probably still complain.

My rent is $3600 a month for a two bedroom because I couldn't find a cheaper alternative that took pets.

A simple zillow search shows 1000sq ft apartments in DC can be bought for 600k CDN or less, way cheaper than Vancouver
