Antiquated Reflections

I know a guy that's constantly getting himself into trouble. His friends have been dropping like flies out of his life and I don't blame them. All he's done is gossip about everyone and manipulate them into depression, financial loss, breakups...You name it he's done it, to his FRIENDS. Family members too. He's extremely judgmental and thinks very highly of himself with nothing, I mean nothing, to show for it. It's all an act, he's actually super bitter. His bitterness is his motivation to "take people down", people who've done nothing to him. And whatever, if they did, it still doesn't add up to the insane level of calculation and sabotage of their life he gets up to. A lot of the old friends that used to hang are doing better since they grey rocked phased him out. One was balding and his hair grew back from no stress. Another one got married. Another went on to own his own company. My confession is any time I hear positive news from one of the old friends I make sure to be the first to tell him, I know hearing about his old friends succeeding is the nail in the coffin and after all the games he's done, I want to be the one delivering the news. Any new person that comes along, I make sure to tell them exactly what he's about. Save themselves the stress. He can't figure out why he's not getting away with the tired manipulation tricks, I'm having too much fun to tell him.

There are so many people like this. It’s great to hear that you’re onto him and that you’re giving him a taste of how it feels to have someone mess with your head all the time. I knew someone just like him as a matter of fact, and he also had almost no friends left either, by the time he reached his late 50’s there was only 1 left. People like them just wear out their welcome after a while.

So essentially you’re confessing to practicing the same gossip, manipulation, and sabotage that you claim has made your “friend” toxic.

You both...

You're "taking him down"?

So you're a frenemy?

Cool. What about girlfriends/boyfriends? Has he ever had any and what happened to them?

He was their toxic "friend", and you're currently his?

It’s true

some people are just shit disturbers, with no explanation other than they just seem to enjoy causing stress for others. I agree with everyone else - you should just step away and have nothing to do with any of this toxic energy. Once you’ve called it out, it’s time to move on. Otherwise you are getting pulled into it and acting just like him, and what you focus on grows!

The comments were supposed to insult I assume, but are sad and symptomatic of deeper societal issues more than anything.

You mostly all think sharing good news is toxic and gossip? How do any of you have friends when you're incapable of celebrating your friends success and secretly orchestrating their demise? You actively cheer on a person going to great lengths to sabotage their family & friends and feel that's ok, but the same friends who made comebacks against challenging odds deserve to suffer with no end in sight, for no reason apparent other than jealousy and spite, while the "toxic" friend goes unchecked to keep doing more damage - why?

What is wrong with some of you? How do you wrap your head around that level of manipulation unless it's inherently within you. I'm not friends with this person, but it's obvious to see friendship/family don't mean much to many of you. The "toxic" friend takes himself down through actions he delights in, no sabotage needed from external sources is the point.
