Car Centric Cities Ctink

Several things happen to make our cities lousy. North American cities are not so old as European or Asian cities, in most cases. Our cities are mostly ones that grew up with the automobile.

Local governments in cities as well as suburbs widened streets to make them dangerous to walk through. Look up the word stroad.

Zoning laws artificially reduce density, thus making most cities too low-density to support public transit.

Governments promoted suburbs (which tend to be more auto-dependent) in a variety of ways-for example, by building roads to open up suburbs for development, by insuring mortgages in suburbs but not cities, and requiring school desegregation in cities but not suburbs. These policies emptied out cities, making them even less dense.

Sucks right? I love Europe and Asia, where I can step out into the streets, walk or jump on my bike and be 15 minutes from everything I need - not to mention a neighbourhood where there's a good vibe, because people are walking around.

done that. isolation. no transit. walk or bike. get home after long trip to the store and realize you forgot something but at the same time, quiet, solitude, fresh air. we wish for what we don't have and don't realize what we do have.

People from Idaho downvoted this confession. Op life is way too short. If you're miserable, move. Or start saving up to move. Good luck.

Compromise

Jun 20, 2022 at 4:09am

It doesn’t matter where you live, there will always be a compromise you’ve got to make. Enjoy the positive things about living out of the city, while acknowledging that it’s not as convenient for amenities. Or move to the city and enjoy the convenient amenities while acknowledging that you don’t have peace and quiet and open spaces to enjoy. In your case I’d suggest getting a bike if you don’t have a car to pick up necessities. You can get a basket and panniers to load stuff into. Or plan your trip to pick up a bunch of stuff to keep on hand and take a taxi. You’ll get used to it after a while : )

yes. don't ask for much. very happy and grateful for what I do have. tho' wish the this wave of hate in the world would stop. wish people perpetrating it would realize they are spreading a destructive disease and are witless pawns of those that wish to destroy. we have a greater responsibility to each other. one of love, tolerance and peace.
