The Georgia Straight musical advent calendar for Christmas 2018—Day Three: Hanukkah edition

Okay, someone's probably going to take me to task for including a bunch of Hanukkah songs in what is nominally a Christmas countdown. But it's the first day—well, technically the first night, I guess—of Hanukkah, and I would be remiss to ignore it. After all, the stats tell us that Judaism is a steadily growing religion in Metro Vancouver, unlike Christianity, which is in decline, demographically speaking.

Mind you, a very large number of what we consider "Christmas songs" are actually totally secular numbers about winter and don't mention any holiday at all, so there's no reason you can't light the menorah while listening to "Winter Wonderland", "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Weather", or "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm". (Well, apart from the fact that it's not actually winter yet and the chances of Vancouver seeing any significant snowfall this year are virtually nil.)

There are, however, plenty of Hanukkah-specific songs. And here are just a few.

Might as well start off with an oldie, and arguably the best-known Hanukkah-themed children's song, variously known as "Dreidel", "The Dreidel Song", or "I Have a Little Dreidel". Actually, let's start off with two versions of it, because they are equally fun, but for different reasons.

      Shir Soul, "Hanukkah/Dreidel"
The Maccabeats, "I Have a Little Dreidel"

With 2018 unofficially the Year of Freddie thanks to the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, it makes some sort of sense that a few Queen-inspired holiday songs have popped up.

      Six13, "Bohemian Chanukah"
Y-Studs, "Don't Stop Me Now: A Queen Chanukah"

No Hanukkah-music roundup would be complete without this guy, of course:

      Matisyahu, "Miracle"
      Matisyahu, "Happy Hanukkah"

Saving the best for last, here's Neil Diamond's epic cover of Adam Sandler's classic "The Chanukah Song".

      Neil Diamond, "The Chanukah Song"

      Chag Urim Sameach!
