After police attempted to prevent a woman from harming herself in Maple Ridge on Christmas Day, the suspect is now facing charges after a physical altercation developed during an attempt to apprehend her.

According to Ridge Meadows RCMP, around 3:55 p.m. on December 25, an officer responded to a report about a woman causing a disturbance at a restaurant in the 22700 block of Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge.

Upon arrival, the officer saw the woman exhibiting erratic behaviour and attempting to injure herself with a sharp metal object. She then dashed out into approaching traffic.

When the officer attempted to apprehend the woman, a struggle developed as the woman attempted to take hold of the officer’s holstered firearm.

The officer then used a Taser on the suspect but it failed to stop her.

As several bystanders were filming the incident on their mobile phones, a citizen who arrived at the scene tried to help the officer in subduing the suspect.

When police backup arrived, including police dogs, the woman continued to resist arrest.

When the female suspect was finally apprehended, she was taken to hospital.

During the struggle, one police officer sustained a lower-body injury. Another officer was taken to hospital after being slashed above the shoulder.

Ridge Meadows RCMP stated in a news release issued today (January 6) that Nicole Nunn of no fixed address appeared in Port Coquitlam provincial court on December 27.

She was charged with one count of attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer and one count of committing assault with a weapon.

Nunn remains in custody until her next appearance in court on Wednesday (January 8).

Ridge Meadows RCMP stated that one of the injured officers returned to work while the other officer is expected to return next week.
