Perhaps the "Trump" name had something to do with it.

Vancouver city council voted today to reject an application from the newly constructed Trump Tower for a Class 3 liquor licence for a nightclub on the hotel’s third floor.

Prior to the vote, two representatives from the hotel spoke positively about the impact the nightclub would have as a tourist destination while maintaining a classy clientele, likening the venue to the Reflections Bar at the Hotel Georgia.

Numerous residents also addressed council in hopes of dissuading them from approving the nightclub. Alex von Kliest of the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association said that at a members’ meeting, the issue was unanimously voted down.

“Directly affected with this development would be 3,000 people,” stated Kliest.

In particular frustration for the CHRA and residents of the area were advertisements for the nightclub by the hotel before the licence had been issued.

“You can’t get if you don’t ask. In this case, the developer has gone a massive step further, embarked upon on a media marketing campaign advertising this nightclub long before any Class 3 license was considered,” he added.

In the end, a majority of councillors sided with the residents. The only members of council to support the motion were NPA councillors George Affleck and Melissa De Genova, as well as Vision councillor Geoff Meggs.

"We rarely see liquor licence applications this big,” commented Vision councillor Andrea Reimer, before stating that the outcries from people opposed were too large to ignore. "It is very rare to get an application with this many responses and so many opposed. Usually, we do get a few more in favour of it.”

Council did, however, vote unanimously in favour of a Class 2 license for a lobby-lounge on the main floor of the building.
