UBC sociologist offers free online zoning tour in Vancouver

Even the most experienced city hall watchers can be confused by Vancouver's zoning schedule.

There are commercial and industrial districts, residential and historic areas, and comprehensive development zones, each with their own subgroups. On top of that, there's an agricultural designation in Vancouver.

Can any of the reporters covering Vancouver city council definitively describe what RS, RT, RM, and FM residential districts represent without consulting the city website?

      I think not.

Fortunately, a UBC sociologist has decided to cut through the fog with a "Virtual Vancouver Zoning Tour".

Nathanael Lauster normally goes on walking tours with students showing how the built environment around Vancouver City Hall corresponds with various designations.

But this year, due to the pandemic, he's posted it online on the homefreesociology.com website.

Check out the PowerPoint presentation—you might learn some things. I certainly did.
