Low toner

How is that in my office I seem to be the only one who knows how to change printer toner and ink? Every time the thing runs out I have people coming to me to tell me “It’s broken” or “I don’t know what to do”. Printers have been around since the 1980’s and yet people still don’t know they need ink? Or how to change them? I can’t believe that you people are out there. I know it’s not in the training but I don’t tell you how to fill it with paper do I? So for all of you reading this it’s simple. Look at the model of the printer and grab the appropriate ink cartridge. In the event that it’s colour, find the appropriate colour and change it. The old one goes back to the printer shop so don’t throw it out. For next week I’ll be telling you how to use a toilet and wipe you ass properly, I’m sure you’re having issues with that too.

I would, but I have actual important work to do. BTW, if you could change the toner that'd be great. Thanks Jerry. Or Jimmy. Or whatever your name is.

Do You Remember?

The jokes about people whose VCR always flashed 12:00? Well, those people work, and they tend to keep one or two people around who know how to program the VCR. It's called "society." You're the one who knows how to do something, and they're all lazy people, so you get the especial pleasure of doing things that they refuse to learn how to do!

I'm not sure if the VCR joke went away because nobody uses VCRs or because it was considered offensive to people who can't program their VCRs.

Decisions, Decisions...

One-ply, two-ply or double up? Quilted or smooth? Brand or generic? Front to back, vice versa or side to side? So many bewildering factors...

Unless you feign amnesia or quit your job, I suggest you think of this as job security. Getting lay users to learn stuff or RTFM... pigs shall fly.

You can break stuff and no one gets mad

The printer at work feels like its going to break when you pull the toner part out. I'm not comfortable breaking the printer.

I love changing the toner

I absolutely love doing it when asked. It's not often people are so easily pleased. Take that shit and RUN with it!

Is it part of your job??

So I've been a consultant at a senior level in many different offices. In pretty much all of them there is a department called something like "admin" in which much of the day to day word documents, etc, get produced. In many offices the admin staff is also trained to take care of much of the office equipment. Now I don't want to sound elitist because I respect everyone regardless of what their job description is. However, those businesses are not paying me to change the toner. They pay me to provide my specific skill and expertise and they pay someone else to change the toner. This makes perfect sense. Why on earth would they want to pay someone a high salary and then expect that same person to spend their expensive time doing mundane tasks? It doesn't make fiscal sense and it doesn't make me lazy or anything else. I get paid to do my job and that doesn't include the maintenance of the copier.

@is it part...

Ah good, I was waiting to see something like this.

So on your planet, is washing dishes still considered women's work? And when the roll of toilet paper runs out, would that be a task for "the help"? (see what I did there?...)

You're not too good for it, sparkles, and this is not rocket surgery. Assuming you can work a stick of chewing gum from the pack to that facehole you put food into (sans wrapper), changing ink or toner in most modern printers is only a bit more complex. Surely a highly paid consultant can manage it.

As the old army saying goes, yo'mama doesn't work here, so look after things yourself.

If you're being asked to do it, and you do it, people will continue to assume you're the one responsible.

If it is NOT your job, then tell the person whose job it is to do it.

If no one has that as a job description, you're office is poorly run.

This is interesting

Such a wide range of thoughts, from "never me" to "I want to do it".

So what's the correct thing to do? I can see everyone's point of view.

I agree that senior level people should not be wasting billable minutes to changing toner cartridges.

Overall though I like to pitch in wherever I can to make a good work environment. I pick up mis-thrown paper towels off the floor. I'll throw away the empty chip bags. I love my job and the people I work with and don't care about the maintenance things that might be "beneath me". My company is very generous and I'm naturally inclined to be generous back.
