Don't eat out anymore
posted February 19th, 2019 at 8:56 AM
I hardly ever eat out or else I have to tip a ludicrous amount. Even if I tip 20%, I usually never get a thank you from the server. A server I went to school with posted on FB. She said that people who can't afford to tip shouldn't go to a restaurant. I wish consumers had an anti-tipping union right about now. She tends to think she is entitled to a good wage while everyone else has to suffer through life.

If you claim 10% of your income as tips the Tax dept will never look into it even if it's 80%.
What is with you people?

Servers make below minimum wage! It is not an easy job! Have you ever tried it? Didn’t think so. Don’t knock it til you try it. As a server I agree, if you can’t afford it, stay home!! I can’t afford it either! If there were no servers to work in restaurants you’d have nothing to bitch about and nowhere to eat out anyway so stfu.

Why is up to the customer to make sure the server makes a living wage? In essence, we're subsidizing their salary with our tips, when it should be the employer who should be compensating them fairly. My standard is 15% so when I get the card machine and the tipping starts from 18% I give 10%. They just lost 5% due to their greediness. Tipping has just gotten out of hand - now most places expect 20%!!! Can someone give me 20% after a day's wage at my place of employment everyday????? No, I don't expect that. If I want to make more money, then I'll look for a higher paying job. That's all.

I agree with tipping. If I don't have enough to go out and tip properly, I don't go out.

People aren't knocking the job of being a server. We just don't understand why these jobs need to be based on tipping and why the employer can't pay servers a livable wage instead. It is such a weird way to compensate people. Like why should a server get $4 dollars for serving a $20 meal and another server get $10 for doing the exact same thing with a $50 meal.
And then customers get pressured to tip more by servers. If you want to get compensated more, have those conversations with your employer, not with the customers.

Well that's kind of the point...many people are not going out that much because they can't afford the tip any longer!

If you can’t afford a jacket, then maybe you shouldn’t go out when it’s raining.

If you can't afford to tip, then you really can't afford to eat out at a restaurant. You should stick to the soup kitchens, food banks, and grocery stores, until you get your financial shit together.

Sorry, NO! I’m sorry for people who feel that they have no choice but to work in a low-paying job. I’m fully aware that servers work hard (at least most of them). However, do you think you’re the only ones who work hard? Hell no you’re not! I have no clue when this attitude of complete entitlement came from in any service industry such as serving, hair dressers, cabbies, whatever, that simply because they do the job they’re hired and paid to do, they deserve extra pay. I don’t get extra pay even though I work my butt off for much longer hours than any servers do, that’s for sure. So if you don’t like the money you’re being paid by your employer, get another job. Stop expecting me to subsidize you!

now that a burger is $17, the amount of tip has just gotten even more for the same service. go figure. too expensive for me.
