Outsider

As ridiculous as it sounds, I feel like an outsider for not using social media. I have a few accounts, but I rarely, if ever, post anything. I consider myself lucky to have a good life, a great partner, a successful career, great hobbies, etc. I’ve visited many beautiful places with my partner and we’ve done amazing things together ( that 90% people would be physically unable to do), but I’ve never felt the need to share my photos with 100+ “ friends”. Unfortunately, this has put me at a disadvantage in this narcissistic society where people think sharing photos of their dinners, their haircuts and their babies every single day should be the norm. I am secretly waiting for the time when the social media evils will be exposed to prove everyone that not using it can be in fact a sign of sanity and not vice-versa.

I don't make my life a reality show either

Jun 2, 2019 at 2:33pm

I don't post any of my day to day activities on my social media profiles. I don't even have a picture of myself on there. I don't allow anyone post on my profile either. I just use social media for news updates, and to argue with, and hopefully educate some common sense into all the stupid people around the world that disagree with me.

Why do you even care?

Your post is strange and smells of insecurity.
If your life is so great social media should be the last thing on your mind.

Weird yeah

"Too Much Information" is becoming a new virtue. If you're not TMI about your life online, people get suspicious of you. I've heard of high schoolers who are shunned by their peers for being anti-social if they don't post every other waking minute of their day.

I wouldn't worry...

.. it sounds like you're having a great time enjoying life. I like it when people post stuff on social media because I am disabled and don't have a family and cannot do things like climb mountains anymore, so I don't get to see that stuff. So, don't worry about what other people think, just enjoy your life while you have it!

Click Farming. Click click click...

Jun 2, 2019 at 6:37pm

We're all employees of click farms. I don't use social media but I know that I'm a modern day tenant click farmer in a neo-feudal society exposing myself to commercial or political agendas. I like to think I can read between the lines and use an ad blocker and VPN but at the end of the day our growing corporatocracy wields enormous power and all I can do is fight the good fight. You are correct, social media is ridiculous. Marshall McLuhan was so ahead of his time.

Thank you, I thought I was alone in my lack of desire to use social media. What a relief to know that others feel this way....

You're not an outsider, you're actually pretty common here. We get at least one social media bashing "confession" a week. What I find funny is the people who pretend they don't care about social media seem to obsessively whine about it at every opportunity. You're clearly insecure about yourself, otherwise you'd just ignore what other people do with their life and whether they post about it or not. Also, it's quite hypocritical that you feel the need to brag about your own "perfect and successful" life for thumbs up and validation. Social media isn't good or evil: technology is only a tool, it depends on how you use it. Your irrational hate for social media and obsession with other people's lives is unhealthy. You'll be happier if you focus on your own life instead of worrying about other people.

You are not alone

I've stopped feeling like an outsider and now feel like someone ahead of her time. Social personal media is not 'being social'. I'm more connected to my community, friends and family than those of my peers on social media. It's false advertising about how well you get along with each other. Don't feel that you're an outsider and embrace your viewpoint!
