I dont know

We are supposed to get through every year with 2 weeks of holiday. Im the only one at my job that knows certain tasks. I KNOW 100% that i will not be allowed to take two weeks at once. I do not consider one week off as a holiday. I REALIZE that two weeks is standard. I know that some people get less or none at all. But can we please aim higher instead of always comparing ourselves with others? My boomer mom is all: wElL iN jApAn tHeY wOrK 70 hOuR wEeks!!! Yeah well suicide and death by stress is common there. Great example ma. Also, she never had to work until her adult life. So she is obviously an expert on the modern workplace. Oh well. If i just wait FIVE FUCKING YEARS i get another week of holiday. Fuck

I lived in Japan, and I can confirm it's one of the unhappiest places on earth, the international happiness study will tell you so if you don't believe me. The Japanese attitude is to stay at work until the boss leaves, which is often close to midnight. And then come back to work (typically after after-work drinking aka “nominication”) as early as 6 or 7am the next day. Its work culture is toxic, rife with bullying, due to the cult like atmosphere, there are long commutes, and your work takes over your life to the point that fatherless homes in Japan doesn’t mean divorce - it means the man has a job.

Don't ever let anyone romanticize Japanese culture for their hard work and "sacrifice for the greater good", maybe it worked after WW2 to rebuild the nation, but it's not working now, Japan is miserable.

Move to Europe, Europe knows how to holiday. Try, France. French law mandates a minimum of 5 weeks vacation per year. And actually, that 5 weeks is a minimum, and they have a 35-hour work week. Look up paid annual leave by country, and you see that Canada is overworked.

started to comprehend what Albert Einstein said: "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." and "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." .... ps: by the way, dear brats who think they are the leaders of our gov't, business and education shitstems, Albert Einstein failed high school math.

Two weeks is just not enough. Late in life I did a job change and started with 3 weeks holidays, eventually worked up to 6 weeks. It was necessary for mental health and to continue doing a good job. It could be a bit brutal returning to hundreds of emails all demanding actions, and trying to catch up with all else, but oh well. My employer just said do the best you can, it will all still be there the next day.
But your mom's opinion is just that, one person's opinion. This "boomer" disagrees with her entirely, and so would most of my cohorts. Age doesn't define a person.

Einstein didn't fail math, but he failed the entrance exam at Zurich Polytechnic because it was in French and at the age of 16… he only had a couple of years of French class under his belt. Somehow, this became some silly story we tell mediocre students to give them hope as adults, "Just you wait and see because Einstein failed math, blah blah… " Einstein did hate school though because he had issues with authority, and there is some evidence he had Asperger's.

We have so much more to give the world than our labour. I recall my older friends talking about the sixties. They said there was a realization of sorts. People started questioning their raison d’etre. Wondering if they just existed to make money and buy things. It lead to people “freaking out”. Some took acid. Others quit their jobs to be free. Many became activists. It didnt last of course. But it changed minds at least and started many movements whose impact remains to this day. Consciousness is like the tides. It ebbs and flows. Let hope we actually wake up this time and do better, at least for the children’s sake.

It's your own fault that you are in this situation.
Quit, and get another job somewhere else that lets you take your 2 weeks holidays.
Or, go out and be self employed: if you truly are The Only One Who Knows-be a consultant in your job and get out freelancing.

Forget two weeks

Four is more humane.

One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that all employees are expendable, including me.

If the world is going to end if you’re not at work for two weeks, fuck that job.

You’re being set up for burnout, which will take you out of commission for much longer and will open the door for the next unwitting victim to replace you.

"If i just wait FIVE FUCKING YEARS i get another week of holiday"

You summed it up. You are WAITING. and WHINING. Stop WAITING. STOP WHINING. Find out where your local MLA has an office. Go ask their office staff about how to find out about government funded training programs. FOLLOW UP.
Keep the job you have so you can qualify for a loan and a student loan. Pick a field to study where there is decent remuneration ONLY and then do the above and find an employer.
Stop F**ing WHINING and take a step forward or just try. Nobody getting you for cheap is going to bump your pay because you did it for cheap last year.

I can tell you a place in BC where you can buy a 4 bdrm house for $120,000 ( you need a mortgage). A house. Not a palace. But maybe YOUR palace?
There exist good jobs if you work at finding them right next to the town. There are swimming and fishing lakes right in town. There is a rink and a community centre. There are schools for kids.
There are no Starb*cks, no clubs, 1 bar, a place to buy food and a lot of potential friends.
Mackenzie BC.

All the other comments are 100% right, and you know what else?
You are right, your employer won't let you take all the holiday time at once. You seem to be living to work rather working to live.

I have a friend that has been counting down retirement for the last 15 years or so. This person is now down to 2.5 years. AND GUESS WHAT?! This person will get a lot of money every single month for a pension.
WOW! So here's the thing, this person will get free money each month and not have to worry about bills, but they will also be 60 and have spent 30 plus prime life years, years that shape your soul and define you as a human in a 9-5. If you are very very lucky this could be you as well. <-- (joke)

Take your pick OP, your life is YOURS to do with as you choose.
