While a menu with tons of options can offer a range of diversity, sometimes it can also be overwhelming. Not to mention time-consuming if you're a decision-precision type of person who has to carefully consider all options before making up your mind.

A new Kitsilano eatery is helping diners in that respect with a streamlined approach.

Gobble opened up at 2017 West 4th Avenue (in the former location of Gypsy Rose Crêpe Café) on May 2.

The petite spot with clean interior design seats 15 patrons indoors, with an additional four outside.

In a chat with the Georgia Straight, owner Kai Hsu said that the concept arose from his desire to offer restaurant-level food but without fancy frills or décor.

With its American-style comfort food cuisine, the focus here is on protein and vegetables, with vegan options. (The menu is gluten- and dairy-free.)

It's a minimalist version of the build-your-own meal model, with a choice of a main, two sides, and sauce.

Choices for mains are steak (beef chuck with star anise, clove, and caramel glaze), porchetta (pork belly with crackling, rosemary, fennel, and peppercorn), or chickpea (with honey, chili pepper, spinach, balsamic, onion, and paprika).

Patrons get to choose two sides from three options: roots (potato, zucchini, carrot, seasonal vegetables, cinnamon, rosemary, and garlic), salad (leafy greens, radish, endive, cabbage, lemon mint dressing), and pilaf (rice, onion, carrot, raisin, cumin, turmeric).

Sauce options are smoked honey mustard, salsa verde, or spicy aioli.

Sizes are regular ($12) or large ($15).

And that's it. Simple and easy. Many of the selections will be particularly seasonally fitting once autumn and winter roll around.

While that constitutes the core menu, Hsu is slowly adding on a few other alternatives, such as steak or porchetta sandwiches ($6.50) as well as macarons (three for $3) and quinoa dessert bars ($3), in addition to a range of beverages.

Hsu also said that they're still in soft-opening mode and is taking his time before they have a grand opening. While he said there won't be any major changes, you can check out their social media for any updates.
