12 food spots to open at UBC in 2017

Students, faculty, staff, and alumni at the University of British Columbia will be happy to know that several new eateries will be making their way to campus this year.

Besides the handful of food choices that are already available inside the Nest (Uppercase, The Pit, Pie R Squared, Honour Roll), at least 12 new food joints will be opening up around the U Boulevard area.

For those who may not be familiar with what U Boulevard consists of (UBC alumni raise your hands if this is brand new information to you), it is the area between Wesbrook Mall, University Boulevard, East Mall, and Student Union Boulevard.

This part of campus includes the Nest, UBC Aquatic Centre, Student Recreation Centre, Alumni Centre, the old Student Union Building, and both bus loops, among others.

Seven of these food businesses will be located on the street level of Central—a new six-storey university rental housing building along University Boulevard that is set to open in Spring 2017.

The new Central building at UBC is slated to open in the spring.

The confirmed food tenants at Central include Rain or Shine Ice Cream, JJ Bean, Jamjar, Bao Down, Joe Pizza, Nori, and TacoMio.

Another five food venues will open at the AMS Student Union Building (SUB), which is currently under renovation and will be known as the UBC Life Building once it opens in Fall 2017.

Andrew Parr, managing director of student housing and hospitality services at UBC, told the Straight by phone that Starbucks, Subway, and Booster Juice will open at the renovated building.

Starbucks and Subway can be argued as making a return rather than entering as new food spots inside the UBC Life building, because they were once located at the old SUB and were always popular with students.

Parr also explained that the other two food businesses haven’t been secured yet, but the university is looking at some healthy food choices as options.

Amidst all the construction and renovation on campus, at least there will be something tasty to look forward to once the buildings are completed.
