When talking to a woman that I don't know very well and she mentions her "girlfriend" if she's trying to let me know that she's taken (and lesbian), or that the person is just a friend of theirs.....

on the context. You would need more info. I always say girlfriend to refer to my female friends, I am not gay. People have been saying that for years. Sort of like guys say, my buddy.

Thanks for setting me straight on that....
When I think about it the "partner" thing is more likely if they were intimate and I should take gf as "buddy".

and I've never referred to my female friends as "girlfriends." Just like I don't refer to my male friends as "boyfriends." That would be very confusing and misleading.

They mean friends. Usually lesbians will say "partner" if they are referring to a romantic companion.
