I feel sorry for people who went through shit that makes them so closed off. My heart hurts for them. Hopefully they find an equal someday. How sad.

Let people function in a self-determined way that works best for them and allows them to work through their own stuff in their own time while you do the same for yourself.
Also, check in and ask yourself whether feeling pity for another person is a form of distraction from some necessary inner work you need to do in order to form healthier emotional connections from this point forward.

I really like that album by U2. It feels so fun and weird. Not the dark angst of Pop, a crap album. To be fair I sold my copy.

and can't bounce back.
For others of us, it's because we had a chance with someone amazing, and it wrecked us for regular people.
And for some of us, we tried singledom and just got comfortable with it. We stopped feeling lonely and started really enjoying our lives. And we don't need your pity thanks. Actually we feel sorry for people who feel that they have to be in a relationship to be fulfilled and are so terrified of being single they stay in unhappy/incompatible relationships.
Not necessarily sad

Some of us post trauma/bad relationships etc., feel better being on our own a lot, don't want to start up new relationships and all, no need. Closing the gates on potential invasions is desirable. Long term, proven, trusted friends only are OK. Pets are good too.

All it takes is just one depraved evil little narcissist to take someone emotionally hostage, doesn't it?

You know some people in this city are just self-absorbed and selfish, not necessarily broken, right? They just don't want to give anything back. It's a city of oversized children.
I know someone a lot like this.
