Applying

I admit I scroll past the entire job postings length to get to the summary of benefits at the end. If you’re not generous, I’m not applying. “Birthday celebrations” does not count as a benefit because I can’t pay my landlord with “Birthday celebrations”.

used to work at a low paying job, everyone was. we used to joke and almost cry while saying it that we were being paid in sunshine dollars because of the local area lifestyle. job satisfaction isn't everything, you still have to eat and pay rent and support your family.
I heart

It’s like a dating profile that only says “you need to be this and that, please don’t be this and that”.
Of course the job posting needs to describe what they’re looking for, but I need to know why I would be interested in the first place.

Employers in Vancouver have been getting away with paying people less than almost everywhere else (at least in Canada) forever. The party’s over for them at long last. It used to be worth it back when Vancouver was still a wonderful place to live. The massive increase in population has destroyed the livability though, so now they’re going to have to pay to make it worthwhile.

Nothing beats those gimmicky sounding job descriptions. Last I checked, a pool table and "well stocked kitchen", does not help me pay for the dentist. When I see the words start up, I immediately click the back button and resume onto the next.
Good luck on your hunt!

It’s almost funny if it weren’t so sad, to see employers post the following benefits: 1) Hip Gastown office 2) $50 coffee card/month 3) Collaborative environment where your contributions matter. These are not junior positions. But the tone of the offered benefits makes it seem like we are all easily wooed by meaningless crap. I want to build wealth. I was able to build wealth in my last job before the company was sold off. I want a pension, stocks, guaranteed annual bonus, percentage of earnings, matched RRSP contributions, etc. Flavoured hot water is not a benefit.
Cake on my birthday

at work makes me really uncomfortable. Firstly I really dont like cake, at all. And secondly I hate being the centre of attention. I dont even celebrate my birthday for that reason. I dread birthdays at work.
